Anesthesia

We provide only the safest form of anesthesia for all patients. Our use of “balanced anesthesia” means your pet will be administrated only small amounts of multiple medicines so that the maximum benefit of analgesics can be achieved with a minimal amount of side affects. We also use state of the art monitoring devices to ensure a safe, uneventful anesthetic event.

Patients undergoing rear limb procedures (fracture repairs, ACL injury repair), abdominal, GI or urinary procedures are generally given an epidural prior to surgery. This starts the pain management process by ensuring your pet has a level of analgesia present in their system prior to the first incision. The type of epidural administered is different than what most traditional thinking is in that it is not intended to anesthetize(numb) the lower body but offer instead is intended to offer a systemic analgesia (sensation of pain management). The epidural will help your pet recovery post-operatively by making him less painful than without it. Fentanyl patches are also used to allow for continued pain management even after the patient has been discharged from the hospital. The benefits of the patch can last up to 5 days after it is initially placed.

For those patients that do not or cannot have an epidural, fluid therapy with pain medications (morphine, hydromorphone) can be offered to also allow pain control. It is of the utmost importance to promote patient comfort and pain management. This allows for a better recovery and patient well-being
