Pain Management

At PBVS, your pet’s safety and comfort are our greatest concern. We provide all patients up to date forms of pain management including injectable narcotics and NSAIA’s as well as medications that are absorbed through the skin. NSAIA’s are Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Analgesics they are used to manage both pain and inflammation.

Pain control is an essential part of optimal patient care. Local, regional and general pain-killers are administered to most effectively manage your pet’s discomfort. Methods and types of analgesics are adjusted as your pet’s medical condition changes thereby ensure both safe and effective pain relief. Trauma and surgical patients are obvious candidates for pain management methods and drugs. However some metabolic conditions and some cancer patients may also require treatment. Commonly used medicants include local anesthetic and infusions, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, narcotics and combination of these drugs. No single protocol is safe and effective for all pets. Consequently drug type and method of administration can be tuned to your pet’s needs.

PBVS uses a balanced analgesia (multiple drug) approach in managing pain. This includes the use of narcotics (injectables and patches), epidurals at the time of surgery and postoperative analgesia (NSAIAS). Your pet's comfort is our top priority and is addressed on an hourly basis. Most patients are sent home with oral pain manager (Carprofen and Etodolac). We utilize several oral medications because each patient responds differently. If you have problems finding any medications PBVS has dispensed, please call our office.
